A recent report conducted by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has revealed that there has been a massive increase in online gambling participation. This latest report covered a six year period from 2008 until 2014 and the UK’s number one gambling regulatory body discovered that certain sectors from the gambling industry have expanded more than others.
For example, they noted that one of the key growth sectors was online gambling. Overall participation in online gambling increased from 9.7% at the end of December 2008 to 15.4% in the year through to the end of December 2014. In other sectors, such as the National Lottery, the UKGC found that there had actually been a decrease in participation rates across the same six year period, even though the Lottery is still officially recognised as the most popular form of gambling in the United Kingdom.
National Lottery participation figures fell from 44% to 37.4%, but despite this dip in participation, the Gambling Commission did also record an overall increase in activities relating to other lotteries. The figure went from 11.1% for the end of June 2009 up to 12.9% in the 12 months that led up to the end of December 2014.
The report also found that there has actually been a decline in the number of people taking part in other gambling activities such as bingo. There was also a decline in virtual gaming machine, fruit machine and slot machine activities. These are the types of machines that you can find in almost every land based sports betting shop.
The Gambling Commission then went on to reveal that the overall frequency of gambling doesn’t seem to be on the rise, apart from high frequency gamblers who place more wagers today than they did in 2012.
